Squamish is a great place to visit all year round, with tons of activities for everyone. With winter well and truly here we have put together a list of the top winter activities in Squamish:
If you went to any of the summer markets in Squamish, you know just how special they are. The winter market is no different. Running at 11am to 3pm on alternate Saturdays from November 22 – April 18, come down to Squamish Elementary School and experience the food, the artists, the crafts and the wonderful community spirit. For more information visit www.squamishfarmersmarket.com/.
There are so many events happening over winter at Squamish’s latest attraction. The impressive Sea-to-Sky Gondola will not only be offering incredible views of the snow capped mountains and surrounding area, but a whole host of activities. On November 28 there is the official Tree Lighting Ceremony, as we properly welcome winter. There is also snowshoeing and tubing all the way through the season. For those foodies out there, why not check out the candle lit dinner series at the top of the Gondola. And if that wasn’t enough, there will also be artisan pop-ups offering local hand-made jewellery, clothes and more!
What better way to get into the Christmas spirit than a ride on the Polar Express. With music, stories and tasty treats this is a great family day out. Visit Mr and Mrs Claus and take an enchanting ride on the only Polar Express in Canada! The train is running on November 29-30 and December 6, 7, 13 and 14 from the West Coast Heritage Railway Park.
Every year Squamish plays host to one of North America’s largest gathering of wintering bald eagles. As hundreds of eagles return to the area they provide an incredible viewing spectacle and a great opportunity to see this wonderful bird in its natural habitat. Prime eagle season runs from late November to mid January. Tourism Squamish is running eagle viewing tours every Saturday from now till late January. You can even rent a float to get an even closer look! Visit their site for more information.
Squamish is popular for its fishing all year round and winter offers more opportunities – whether you love fly-fishing for Winter Bull Trout, or want to try your hand at ice fishing there’s something for everyone.
Skiing, Snowboarding and all things snow
It’s not just Whistler that has all the fun in the snow! Squamish receives its fair share and is home to some great snow based activities. For the adventurers out there, Squamish has some fantastic backcountry skiing and snowboarding. Visit the Adventure Centre to find out more information about trails and where to find the best runs. There is also heli-skiing and cat-skiing for those wanting an easier (albeit more costly) route to the deep powder. For those after a slower pace, why not check out the cross-country skiing or snowshoeing. And if you have children there are plenty of tubing activities to get involved in. Well, there you have it. What are you waiting for? Get out there and have some fun!
